In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Bonita Murungi Arinaitwe

Author
At 12 years of age, Bonita Treasure Murungi Arinaitwe has written two books; Friends (2014) and The Brave Prince Michael (2015) published by Palm Publications in Kampala. Both are fiction and have been approved by the National Curriculum Development Centre as readers for upper primary in Uganda. As Uganda’s youngest award winning author, Arinaitwe shares her fears as well as her strengths in a field admired by many.

Charlotte Nabasa

Civil Engineer
Charlotte Nabasa is a graduate of Civil Engineering from Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus. As a young woman, Charlotte believes that Civil Engineering is an unexplored profession for women and offers diverse opportunities for other girls joining the field. Charlotte’s dream is to make a significant change in the lives of Ugandan people through civil works in transport and Eco buildings among others. “I want to inspire young girls out there to believe in themselves, to believe that they can do anything they want if they put their mind to it. It feels great to know that you were part of a team that helped to design and build for the benefit of your community.”

Christine Semambo

Executive Director
As the Executive Director of Forum for African women Educationalists Uganda, Christine Semambo Sempebwa is at the forefront of uplifting the status and welfare of the marginalised, disadvantaged and vulnerable girls and women in Uganda. In her talk, Christine ponders on the question of policy on retention of the girl child in school

Dorothy Muhumure

Social Worker
Dorothy Muhumure is an accomplished education planning professional and social worker with over 15 years of experience in planning, implementing and executing social enterprise projects in various parts of Uganda. She majors in the areas of education, gender and adolescent sexual reproductive health rights. Dorothy is principally motivated about working with young people especially women and girls in addressing bottlenecks to success and devising creative and out of the box ideas to see them reach their full potential. Through her work Dorothy has overseen the access to education for over 4,000 girls and 1,050 boys in Uganda, vehemently impacting the lives of over 35,000 individuals and community groups in different parts of the pearl of Africa.

Esther Kalenzi

Journalist
Esther Kalenzi is a Ugandan woman who is passionate about young people and positive social change. She is the team leader at 40 days over 40 smiles Foundation.(40-40) Although she is a journalist by profession, Esther was convicted to do something more for the less privileged in her community in 2012. Consequently, she quit her job to run 40-40 full time. 40-40 revolutionalised the use of social media to do good in Uganda. They have raised over UGX 200 million from Ugandans and supported over 1,000 underprivileged children. The group has received recognition both locally and internationally for their outstanding contribution to society. Together with her team of volunteers, Esther continues to pursue ways in which to engage Ugandans, especially the youth, to be the change they want to see.

Habagaya Mwesi

Mwesi Y Habagaya is a passionate advocate for Reproductive, Maternal Newborn Child adolescent health and Human rights with special focus on youths particularly young women and girls. He envisions a community where all girls access quality Education and No woman dies due to complications related to pregnancy and child birth. Mwesi Habagaya is the Founder and Executive Director for Universal Health Development Foundation a non-government organization whose aim is to improve The slogan that drives his passion is "Play your part best and you will rest in peace”.

Harold Ayebare

Cyber Security Consultant
After losing his mother to breast cancer, Harold Ayebare founded the Ayebare Foundation; a non-profit organization whose core objective is to create cancer awareness and encourage regular cancer screening. His goal is to establish a state of the art modern cancer diagnostics and treatment centre that provides affordable services to the public.

Hope Nankunda

Counsellor /Executive Director
A teacher and counselor by profession working mainly with adolescents in different schools, Hope Nankuda is the Co-Founder and Executive Director Health Promotion and Rights Watch Uganda (HPRW-U) working to strengthen the health systems in Uganda with strong emphasis on Menstrual Hygiene Management for the vulnerable girl child. She is the Central Region Co-coordinator for Girls Not Brides Uganda Alliance- a Global partnership working to End Child Marriage and Teenage pregnancies. She has a wide experience in working with children with special needs mainly those with Dyslexia and mental Retardation. A 2015 TEDxNakaweroWomen Speaker Hope is an advocate for children’s rights, a member of the Women movement, a member of Women in Public Service, a mother, a trainer and a mentor. Her dream in life is to establish a HOPE CENTRE where children with Dyslexia can be trained from and given the attention that they rightfully deserve.

Lillian Linda

Researcher / Communications Specialist
Linda Lilian is a seasoned communication specialist, who derives her passion from wanting to cause a positive change through action research and evidence based documentation. In her TEDx talk, Linda ponders on a number of open questions derived from her current project focusing on valuating women in leadership using an ethical lens. Should women lead?

Margaret Nanyombi

Tech enthusiast
Margaret Nanyombi is a passionate, enthusiastic young lady with a crazy passion for IT and in her final year at Makerere University. She was raised by a single mother who worked as a secretary at the Post Office. Her work environment exposed Margaret to a lot to computers and the internet. Since then Margaret allowed herself to be used as a vessel to influence positive change in her community and country, especially through social media and Information Communications Technology which has also contributed to the way she looks at the world in different dimensions. Margaret is the BVKit project lead. BVKit is a self-test diagnosis kit that enables women to monitor their reproductive health at home. She is also STEM Power lead, Google Developer Group Lead and Women Techmaker Lead for the Makerere University developer communities.

Tolofisa Gubya

Health Trainer
After the war era in Uganda, Mrs. Gubya Tolofisa, a teacher then, was one of the few chosen to undertake training to combat hunger. Now 84, a leader and great health trainer, she shares her secrets of how to keep young and healthy. Mrs. Gubya is a household name and has continued to train and produce organic vegetables, brain boosters, immune boosters, seedlings and many more.

Tracy Kobukindo

Public Health Specialist
As a public health specialist Tracy Kobukindo’s main areas of interest are community health, maternal & child health (reproductive health), education and poverty alleviation. She has designed two research studies in areas of Reproductive health, one focusing on Health seeking behavior amongst adult female refugees in Kyaka II Refugee settlement (Kyegegwa) and the other focused on knowledge, attitudes of repetitive induction of abortions amongst women receiving Post abortion care in Uganda.
