We will examine if it is possible to feel secure even when you are not, or, conversely, are we sometimes more secure than we feel? For example, why is there greater fear of risk associated with flying, when driving is statistically more dangerous? Our fears develop from our perceptions of risk and security, but how well do our perceptions match reality? In our first Salon of 2016, we will examine how this dynamic influences our thinking and our activities.
After viewing a thought-provoking TED Talk about the mirage of security, we will share our thoughts with each other. The discussion will be moderated by Omar H. Ali. Dr. Ali is the 2016 Carnegie Foundation North Carolina Professor of the Year, Associate Professor of Comparative African Diaspora History, and Interim Dean of Lloyd International Honors College at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
