TEDxOxford is one of the largest independently organised TEDx events in the UK. Previous installments of the event sold out within days and have featured world-renowned speakers, delivering fantastic and awe-inspiring talks. The conference has been covered by publications such as Wired, the Huffington Post and the New Scientist.

The 2016 event will be the first TEDxOxford ever to feature a theme! ‘Find X’ will be the underlying topic of the talks, and a challenge for our audience. It is set to be the most thought-provoking conference to date.

Alyea Pierce

Alyea Pierce is an author, poet, and playwright, who is a “real nice cook up” of the West Indies. Pierce’s work has been featured on the stages of the Apollo Theatre and Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre in New York, as well as various TEDx events, and universities across the States. Her work has been published in the Caribbean Writer, and she is the 2016 playwright-in-residence and actress for the Strength Out of Shadows Theatre company. Alyea is studying for her Master’s of Education at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Ewan Morrison

Ewan Morrison is an award winning Novelist and Filmmaker known for his controversial interventions in politics and the arts. He practices “experiential writing” - throwing himself into new experiences in order to write about them “from the inside”. His “adventures” have included becoming a swinger, a secret shopper and a New Age convert. His books include Close Your Eyes, the internationally renowned Tales from the Mall and Swung - which is also a feature film.

Floyd Woodrow

Having served in the SAS for more than 20 years, Floyd Woodrow MBE DCM has achieved at the very highest levels. Inspiring his men in the most demanding of situations. He has subsequently worked in business, sports and education to deliver his highly sought after teachings. His first book Elite was published in 2012 and his subsequent book The Warrior, The Strategist and You has just been released.

James Humberstone

As a composer, technologist and teacher, James Humberstone believes that music education can lead all education through the challenges of the 21st Century. After all, there is no more experiential, creative, child-centred subject than music – or so he claims. A trained ‘classical’ composer, James migrated to Sydney, Australia in 1997 and has also worked in the fields of music software, education (with children and adults of all ages), and as a musicologist. Today he is a lecturer in music education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and remains an active composer. His recent musical output included a permanent electro-acoustic installation at the Australian National Maritime Museum on board a retired destroyer and a submarine. In 2016 James is collaborating on a Hip Hop album, and composing a song cycle. He has also just released the University of Sydney’s first (free) MOOC, “The Place of Music in 21st Century Education” at www.coursera.org.

Jennifer Cassidy

Jennifer Cassidy is an Irish author, diplomatic consultant, and international development specialist. She has served as a political attaché to Ireland’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (New York), the European External Action Service to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade during its 2013 Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Now at the University at Oxford, Jennifer researches and lectures on the very game she once played. Her primary research centres on the theme of Digital Diplomacy; questioning how diplomatic agents use social media platforms during times of political crises, and the extent their use can be deemed (in) effective within diplomatic crises communication strategies. Alongside this work, she is producing a forthcoming book on Gender and Diplomacy, on which her TEDx talk is based.

Lauren Book

Lauren Book, M.S. Ed, is an internationally respected & renowned child advocate, former classroom teacher & best-selling author. She is also 1 of 42 million survivors of child sexual abuse living in the U.S. today. Armed with the knowledge that 95% of child sexual abuse is preventable through education & awareness, Book is using her personal experience as a vehicle to create change. She created a Pre-K through grade 12 sexual prevention education curriculum used in more than 55,000 classrooms worldwide & has advocated for the passage of laws to protect children. Book has been named a PEOPLE All-Star Among Us, L’Oreal Woman of Worth & is the recipient of a Congressional Medal of Merit for her tireless work to protect childhood. She is an EMMY nominee & Gracie Award-winning producer & has been featured by media outlets including Newsweek, Cosmopolitan, the Huffington Post, USA Today & many more. Book lives in Florida where she serves as founder & CEO of the Lauren’s Kids Foundation.

Meredith Leston

Meredith Leston is a full-time student studying Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. She works as a mental health campaigner and started the campaign ‘Meeting of Minds’ whilst at university. This attempts to bring an academic spotlight to mental health and advocates the need for mental health education in schools. She recently won The Prime Minister’s Point of Light award for work promoting mental health awareness. After graduating she intends to start a charity focusing on providing developing countries with mental health education and infrastructure. She will also begin her PhD investigating gender differences in mental illness at Oxford this September.

Neil Ashton

Dr Neil Ashton CEng is a researcher at the University of Oxford’s e-Research Centre and currently a visiting scholar at NASA Ames Research Centre. An ex-F1 engineer, his work now focuses on how major car manufacturers, aerospace companies and even surgeons can use simulation tools to better understand turbulence and bring about new innovative designs. Nezam Afdhal

Nezam H. Afdhal, MD, is a Senior Physician at the Liver Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Afdhal received his MD degree in 1981 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and did fellowship training at University College Dublin and at Boston University School of Medicine. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Afdhal’s clinical expertise focuses on the management of the complications of liver disease, including cirrhosis and portal hypertension. His research has been on liver fibrosis, hepatitis B and C where he has led national and international teams on the treatment and cure of HCV and HBV. He is currently working on issues of global access and education for HCV in the developing world.

Sangu Delle

Born in Ghana, Sangu’s childhood home was a refuge for victims of torture and violence from Liberia and Sierra Leone. Sangu graduated from Harvard with highest honors in African Studies and Economics. Convinced that community needs can best be met through entrepreneurship, in 2008 he founded an investment holding company, Golden Palm Investments (GPI) to fund promising startups that can have social impact and generate jobs. GPI has backed startups throughout the continent such as Solo Mobile, mPharma,and Stawi Foods. GPI has built a portfolio of greenfield companies in healthcare, real estate, and financial services. Sangu has received several international accolades including being named Africa’s “Young Person of the Year” 2014, a 2014 TEDGlobal Fellow, one of Forbes’ top 30 most promising entrepreneurs in Africa in 2015 and Euromoney’s “Africa’s Rising Stars” award for “outstanding individuals who are changing the financial, investment and business landscape in Africa.”
