Arunachalam Muruganantham

Social Entrepreneur
Mr. Muruganantham is a native of Coimbatore, India and was first introduced to the issues which menstruating women from the lower classes of the society face when he realized that his wife used old rags. He set out making pads of different materials and testing them first on his wife and then medical students. But when this proved ineffective because of their reluctance to give proper feedback, he went one step further. He made a rubber bladder, filled it with animal blood and tied to his hip in order to test them out himself. This left him ostracized by his entire community and even his own family. But he never stopped, once he realized that only 12% of women in India had access to proper menstrual hygiene products, as per an AC Nielsen study.
