In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Brynn Welch

Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Dr. Welch’s research and teaching interests are in applied ethics and social/political philosophy. She has published in Social Theory and Practice, Journal of Medical Ethics, Journal of Political Philosophy, and Economics and Philosophy. Her work focuses on whether and to what extent public social justice goals should constrain private individual family decisions, such as what we owe our parents, whether to have children, where to send those children to school, and even what children’s books to purchase.

Christine Fleet

Biology Department Chair + Associate Professor of Biology

As a member of the Biology Department at Emory & Henry College, Christine M. Fleet's research interests focuses on genetic control of plant growth hormone production. She has published in the areas of genetics, science education and professional development for science graduate students. She began her career as a professor within a month of becoming a parent, which provided opportunity to reflect on some of the challenges facing women (and parents) in science. She is actively involved in mentoring undergraduate student researchers and in supporting initiatives that encourage young women’s participation in science.

Linda Schirmeister-Gess

Head Women's Soccer Coach

Born in Frankfurt, Germany and raised in London, England, I started my playing career for Watford Ladies Football Club, the leading women’s club in Hertfordshire, England before pursuing my collegiate career at Slippery Rock University, where I earned a B.S. in Psychology. As current head women’s soccer coach at E&H, I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Recreational Sciences and Coaching Education. I have attended and completed the National Coaches Institute and Positive Coaching Alliance trainings. I am the co-director of the girl’s soccer program at SportsChallenge Leadership academy and have a passion in culture creation and leadership development.

Sarah Fisher

Assistant Professor of Political Science

Dr. Sarah Fisher, a native of Huntsville, Alabama, joined the faculty at Emory & Henry in August 2015. As a professor of Political Science, she enjoys leading students through traditional debates in international relations and incorporating insights from other disciplines. Her research focuses on foreign policy and decision-making especially with regard to international conflict. She is working on several projects related to interventions in civil conflict, and is continuing a project with Florian Justwan on territorial disputes in India.

Talmage Stanley

Director of Appalachian Center for Civic Life + Director of Bonner Scholar Program + Director of Master of Arts program in Community and Organizational Leadership + Chair of Department of Public Policy and Community Service

Dr. Talmage "Tal" Stanley received his B.A. in History from Emory & Henry College, attended seminary at Emory University, and received his doctorate in American Studies at Emory University’s Institute of the Liberal Arts. Prior to coming to Emory & Henry, Tal was a minister in Wythe County, Virginia. Tal is a professor for the Civic Innovation Major, and is the director of the college’s Bonner Scholars Program. He has a deep passion for the Appalachian area in which he grew up. Through his research, writings, and teachings, Tal tries to create opportunities for persons to come to value their stories and those of others.
