Theme: State of the Art

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Lemon People

A London-based collective formed in the summer of 2014, we are an affinity of artists, writers, photographers, filmmakers and musicians. For each of our projects - from small scale to large - we utilise each others abilities to make those projects happen. We work as individuals, mostly as freelancers, however a lot of our work wouldn't be possible without the combined effort of the Lemons.

Andrew Stockman

Professor Andrew Stockman is the Steers Chair of Investigative Eye Research at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. He is a leading psychophysicist and expert on testing visual function, who specializes in physiological optics, colour vision, rod vision, visual adaptation, temporal sensitivity, retinal processing, and clinical psychophysics.

Angela Breitenbach

Angela Breitenbach is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy and a Fellow of King’s College at the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on Kant and the history of modern philosophy, the philosophy of science, and aesthetics. She is particularly interested in questions at the intersection of these areas concerning the aesthetics of science and Kantian philosophy of science,

Bolanle Tajudeen

Bee Tajudeen is a Black Feminist and Womanist. The current Education Officer at University of the Arts London and a Contributor for Shades of Noir, through these roles, she is committed to discussing liberation and diversity in higher education. Bee founded 'Black Blossoms' in 2015, a platform which is dedicated to celebrate Black Women, and in April 2016, Bee will be launching the Black Blossoms Bookstore, an online shop which will be selling books written by African writers.

Colum Elliott-Kelly

Colum Elliott-Kelly is Head of Education at Blippar, the world's leading visual discovery platform. Blippar Edu's vision is to turn the world into an interactive learning environment, and the scope of the strategy covers schools, cultural institutions, workplaces and the world around us. Before joining Blippar in Summer 2014, Colum co-founded an e-learning start-up which brought world class lecturers and content to UK secondary schools. He is currently pre-launch on a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting educational technology in the developing world.

Conrad Shawcross

Conrad Shawcross (b. 1977) explores subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. 2015 saw the artist starting to tackle public spaces with major works in Dulwich Park (Three Perpetual Chords), The Royal Academy courtyard (The Dappled Light of the Sun), and Chatsworth House (Beyond Limits). His public sculpture Paradigm is at The Francis Crick Institute, London; The Optic Cloak will be completed in Summer 2016 as part of Knight Dragon's Greenwich Peninsula Energy Centre.Shawcross has had solo presentations at institutions across the UK and around the world, including Mexico, Paris and Tasmania.

Gavin Freeborn

A self-taught Photographer, Gavin Freeborn, originally from Ireland now lives in Brixton, London and works in marketing and communications at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. Over the last 10 years he has also made a portrait and documentary photography practice. Social media is integral to his work and Gavin also teaches this subject part-time at UAL and other institutes.

Helene Steiner

Helene is a UK based designer and researcher with a focus on new interactions in and with our (natural) environment. Her research follows an biological approach and looks atopportunities to not only bridge the physical and digital world but also thenatural and artificial. Currently she is a PostDoc Researcher in Human Experience Design at Microsoft Research Cambridge, UK.

Jacob Alexander

Jacob Alexander is a Creative Director and menswear designer based in London. He feels HIV has been sidelined by larger corporation charities raising money for other causes such as cancer. Having been diagnosed with HIV on the morning of his 22nd birthday, he hopes to raise awareness and a positive attitude toward HIV, through his ‘Positive Project’ by using modern technology, social media and user experience in mobile app design.

Nadine Chahine

Dr. Nadine Chahine is an award winning Lebanese type designer working as the UK Type Director and Legibility Expert at Monotype. Nadine’s research focus is on eye movement and legibility studies for the Arabic, Latin, and Chinese scripts. She has numerous awards including two Awards for Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club in New York in 2008 and 2011. Her typefaces include: the best-selling Frutiger Arabic, Neue Helvetica Arabic, Univers Next Arabic, Palatino and Palatino Sans Arabic, and Koufiya.

Skye Lourie

Skye Lourie was born in New Zealand and brought up between Scotland & Italy. After moving back to England, she was thrown straight into her first job at 18, a channel 4 TV miniseries. Skye continued to land parts including feature length films The Facility and The Holding, TV series Hustle, BAFTA nominated short film, Slap and the BBC comedy, Uncle. Skye started writing poetry to convey her personal experience in the acting industry which quickly became more than just an outlet for her own creativity and amusement and after several successful performances Skye landed the opportunity to take her ‘spoken thought’ play to Edinburgh 2016.

Toby Young

Toby Young is a composer, researcher and curator from London. Since winning the BBC Proms Young Composer of the Year in 2006, Toby has written music for classical groups such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and choir of Westminster Abbey, as well as urban and EDM acts including Chase & Status, Jacob Banks and MOKO. Toby is also lecturer in music at Somerville College, Oxford, and Co-Director of the interdisciplinary Oxford Centre for Creativity in Research (OCCR).
