The first TEDxDeakinUni celebrates the amplitude of pervasiveness. Everything that unites and transforms has the quality of transversing across boundaries. Winds and currents, air and water, are the natural elements that embody the essence of pervasiveness: fluidity, motion, immersion. New technologies of mind and matter are embodiments of pervasiveness. Augmented realities, responsive environments, hybrid ecologies of human and artificial intelligences are all around us.
All around us are also the dire challenges presented by the environmental impact of human technologies upon the Earth. Our land, air and water are connected, as well as our technologies and ourselves. Pervasiveness presents us with many important questions, such as the existence of natural limits to technological advancement, the planetary cost of our actions as a species and the ways to achieve sustained prosperity and balance within an interdependent world. TEDxDeakinUni will bring together scientists, artists, thinkers and creators who are trying to provide answers to these questions and engaging with the forces of pervasiveness that are shaping the conditions for the emergence of new possible worlds.
