TEDxYouthBuildCharterSchool celebrates those educators, educational allies, students, social leaders, and communities who are actively involved in a collaborative effort to reclaim public education as a tool for the improvement of socio-economic conditions and for the enfranchisement of young people as agents for change within their communities (and within a democratic society). It provides a means for launching a new campaign for radically rethinking public education – not just focusing on pre-existing roadblocks like standardized assessment, evaluation, or discriminatory funding structures, but on the structure of American public schooling in its entirety.
Among the critical questions asked throughout this event include the following: How does one de-centralize standards and make school not simply a place to learn but to grow? How do we cultivate an environment wherein students are given the tools and the opportunity to become high-functioning, invigorated, critical members in a democratic society?
