Ludmila Rattis researches how climate and deforestation impact natural ecosystems and agricultural production in the Amazon rainforest and Brazil's Cerrado region.

Why you should listen

Ludmila Rattis is a scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center in the US and the Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia (IPAM) in Brazil, where she researches how changes in land use affect regional climate, native species and agricultural systems.

Growing up on a farm in the countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil, Rattis learned to view the interactions between plants and animals not as a source of profit or passion but as a genuine form of cooperation benefitting the entire community. This outlook has inspired her work as an ecologist, where she explores how naturally supportive systems can help humanity solve some of our most significant global challenges.
