Vladimiro Mujica

Venezuelan Chemist. Presentely at ASU Dept of Chemistry and BioChemistry. His research is centered on modeling the behavior of complex physical and chemical systems. He is particularly interested in the description of quantum effects in the emerging behavior of systems of nanoscopic dimensions. Nanosystems may have very different optical, magnetic, chemical and electrical properties compared to the bulk system of the same material. Size and quantum effects determine these variations and we try to describe how they translate into the observed experimental behavior.

Benjamin Scharifker

B.R. Scharifker is currently President of the National Academy of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences of Venezuela. A Chemistry graduate from Simon Bolivar University in 1976, obtained Ph.D in Physical Chemistry from the University of Southampton, UK, in 1979. He entered the teaching staff of Simon Bolivar University at the Chemistry Department in 1980, becoming full professor in 1989 and serving successively as Department Head, Dean of Research, Vice-rector for administration, and Rector. Between 1984 and 1986 he joined the newly-formed Hydrogen Research Center at Texas A&M University, USA, as Senior Scientist and Associate Director. At Simon Bolivar University he shaped an Electrochemistry group carrying out work with several colleagues and research students, producing over a hundred research publications, patents and books on Electrochemistry.

Anna Katherina Vivas

Born in Tovar, Merida state, Venezuela. Graduated from Universidad de los Andes (ULA) with a BS in Physics (Cum Laude), she pursued her PhD studies at Yale University (USA) and got her doctorate degree in 2002. She currently works as a researcher at CIDA and has published more than 20 refereed papers that have been cited more than 450 times according to the Astrophysics Data System/NASA. She is recognized for her work on the RR-Lyrae Survey with the QUEST project, a joint initiative of ULA, CIDA and Yale to upgrade the 1.5 mt Schmidt camera located in the Llano del Hato Observatory, to perform a sky survey looking for quasars. Among her investigations results, we can cite the discovery of more than 100 RR-Lyrae stars that have allowed the mapping of stellar streams that run through the halo of our Galaxy, the Milky Way. Dr. Vivas is considered an expert in RR-Lyraes and is cited as a reference in the field.

Pocho Garces

Musician, graphic designer and chef of the Posada Veltico and Claraboya restaurants in Barquisimeto Edo. Lara, Venezuela.

Guido Nuñez-Mujica

Young Venezuelan Biologist, entrepeneur and TEDGlobal 2010 fellow.Guido is a biologist who has taken inspiration from the lava lamp to produce a low-cost device that can enable DNA diagnosis. It's less than a fourth of the size of normal DNA machines, and could make disease detection possible in a far wider range of countries around the world. The device has been designed to be rugged, portable, fast, and easy to use, so it can be employed in remote locations by minimally-trained medical staff.
