The TEDxTeachersCollege 2012-2013 special events and main conference will focus on the theme of “Be Here Now." The events will cover four subthemes: being a mindful individual, creating mindful workplaces, building mindful communities, and practicing mindful education. These subthemes will feature both students and practitioners as speakers and will foster dialogue on subjects such as social entrepreneurship, leadership, environmental stewardship, incorporating local, healthy lunch choices in schools, differentiated learning, race and racism and other relevant issues.
Medical pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn popularized the concept of mindfulness as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994). This idea was originally used as a technique for managing anxiety, pain, and illness, but has since found usefulness in all settings. Being mindful means being aware, being present, and in the context of the work in progress at Teachers College, being mindful members in the global community.
