In celebration of the Continent in all its diversity, complexity and beauty, the organising team of TEDxTableMountain hosted an evening conference of inspirational ideas worth spreading, themed: Dynamic Leaps. The event was hosted on Africa Day, 25 May 2016, at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town.

Bryan Ramkilawan, Thabo Makhetha, Didier de Villiers

CEO - Cape Town Fashion Council
Bryan Ramkilawan is CEO of the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC), an industry association created to represent, develop, support and grow the Western Cape fashion sector. Thabo Makhetha-Kwinana is the creator and owner of Thabo Makhetha - a Cape Town-based, female-run fashion design studio established in 2009. Didier de Villiers is founder and creative director of Magents, an international fashion brand inspired by and founded in South Africa.

Buhle Ngaba

Actress, Activist, Author
Buhle Ngaba is an actress, activist and author. Her work – on stage, on paper and in action – is focused on women’s rights and issues of representation within the arts. Her latest project, writing “The Girl Without A Sound”, was devised as an act of restoring power and agency to young black girls in South Africa and to address the lack of representation of black protagonists in children’s literature internationally. “To dream of roles as a black woman is to accept responsibility as the writer of those roles,” Buhle says, as she engages with that responsibility in action every day.

Indira Tsengiwe

Founder of Youngpreneur Media
Indira Tsengiwe is the founder of Youngpreneur Media, a media brand and production company purposed to create content for and about young entrepreneurs across the African continent. Inspired by both the potential and activity of youth entrepreneurship on the continent, the entity was created to serve further impetus in the cultivation of Africa’s young entrepreneurs through television, digital and in-flight media. In her experience as a young entrepreneur that deals directly with a magnitude of young entrepreneurs from across the continent, she has gained experience and understanding of the way in which the youthful market does business. Indira Tsengiwe is a World Economic Forum, Global Shaper; a member of the Writer’s Guild Association of South Africa and is a columnist for Fin24. She has contributed to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, South Africa.

Jeff Murugan

Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, Head of the Laboratory for Quantum Gravity & Strings at UCT
Jeff Murugan was born in Tongaat. On completion of a BSc degree, majoring in applied mathematics and physics, he obtained a first class Honours degree in specialising in mathematical physics all at UCT. This was followed by an MSc for a thesis on topological solutions of low dimensional field theories. In 2000, he was awarded a Lindbury Fellowship to pursue a PhD jointly at UCT and Oxford University. After being awarded a PhD for his work on noncommutative geometry in string theory, he began work as a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University. He returned to a faculty position as a lecturer at UCT in 2006. Prof. Murugan is currently a deputy head of the Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics at UCT. He also heads the Laboratory for Quantum Gravity & Strings. Among his accolades, he is the recipient of the bronze medal of the South African Mathematical Society, a founding member of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), current president of the SA Gravity Soc.

Jitsvinger & Dave Reynolds

Jitsvinger aka Quintin Goliath is one of South Africa’s best known Afrikaans vernacular hip hop artists and poets. Not only is he an accomplished wordsmith and lyricist, but also a skilled guitarist with a distinctly Cape style. He is a strong believer in collaborating with other musicians and poets across different musical spectra and genres, always transcending boundaries, experimenting and creating new sounds. Here with Dave Reynolds - SA’s leading steel pan player and a SAMRO award winning composer.

Kgomotso Mokoena

Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg and CEO SpreadLuv, a non-profit organisation which provides career guidance to learners at under-resourced schools.
Kgomotso is a lecturer at the University of Johannesburg and CEO SpreadLuv, a non-profit organisation which provides career guidance to learners at under-resourced schools. She has worked as a legal researcher for former Justice Kate O’Regan, current Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and the late former Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson of the Constitutional Court. She is a fellow of both Brightest Young Minds and the African Leadership Initiative. She is also the 2014 recipient of the Inyathelo Youth in Philanthropy Award in addition to being named one of Mail and Guardian’s Top 200 Young People to Watch in 2015. Kgomotso holds a diploma in Social Entrepreneurship from GIBS and practiced as an attorney at Cheadle Thompson Haysom Inc in Johannesburg for 4 years. Kgomotso holds a BA in Political Science and Law, an LLB and an LLM in IP and Media Laws, all from Wits. She has most recently been appointed as a member of the Charities Aid South Africa Board of Directors.

Shadrick Mazaza

Founder of African Consciousness Institute
Dr Mazaza is a physician, philosopher and university academic. He is Founder of African Consciousness Institute, an organization dedicated to the Waking up, Showing up and Speaking up required to co-create the Africa we desire. His main focus is currently authentic leadership and personal transformation. His extensive leadership participation in the medical profession includes: Board of the South African Medical Association; Board of the Council for Health Services Accreditation of Southern Africa; The College of Family Physicians of South Africa and is deputy president and immediate past president of the South African Academy of Family Physicians.

Tarryn Bannister

Socio-economic rights & administrative justice
In 2010, Tarryn Bannister graduated from Stellenbosch University with her LLB degree. In 2011, Tarryn joined the Overarching Strategic Plan (OSP) Project on Combating Poverty, Homelessness and Socio-Economic Vulnerability under the Constitution at Stellenbosch University. She conducted the research for her LLM thesis on access to health care services for survivors of gender-based violence under the auspices of the Project and received her LLM (cum laude) in 2012. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Stellenbosch University. The title of her doctoral dissertation is “The implications of a relational feminist interpretation of the socio-economic rights for cohabiting partners”.

Valerie Amani

Fashion Designer
Born in Tanzania, Valerie is the Founder/Creative Director of Kahvarah, a clothing brand that is passionate about responsible fashion and woman empowerment. She completed her Bachelor of Economics at Rhodes University, where she was one of the founding members of the East African Society and active in the President’s award programme empowering the local youth. She then studied her Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design at FEDISA ( Cape Town) and acquired a Certificate in Luxury Brand Management (Domus Academy, Milan). She has worked with the Cape Town Carnival, and is a freelance stylists or the Woolworths visual Merchandising team
