In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

AkashA

More popularly known as AkashA, this eclectic seven-piece World Fusion Music band is internationally acclaimed for their unique sounds incorporating Malaysian music and rhythms with other styles of music from African, Celtic, Chinese, Cuban jazz, Latin beats and more. AkashA itself embodies the melting pot of Malaysia, comprising Jamie Wilson Abdullah (guitar), Nizam Azis (world percussions), Eric Li (piano), Kumar Karthigesu (sitar), Greg Henderson (bass guitar), Vick Ramakrishnan (tabla, vocal percussions), and Badar Ben Taleb (rebana and percussions). The band dabbles in various genres, from local ethnic sounds to Blues, Bluegrass, Latin, Bossanova, Middle Eastern, Classical and even Old Western, among others. Sitar with guitar, rebana with djembe, the cajon keeping pace with the lilts of the eukelele, jazz piano…Hindustani Raga style.

James Lee

Originally trained in graphic designing, his creative skills has led film director and writer James Lee to traverse far on the reel roads. He ventured into video filmmaking after he began acting and directing theatre plays, and has appeared in Amir Muhammad’s Lips to Lips and played the estranged father in Liew Seng Tat’s award-winning Flower in The Pocket. In 2001 he directed his first feature film, Snipers, followed by Ah Beng Returns in the same year. His film Beautiful Washing Machine won the Best Asean Feature Award and FIPRESCI Prize (International Federation of Film Critics) in the 2005 Bangkok International Film Festival. The movie also received rave reviews from The Village Voice and Variety. He also won the Best Asean Feature again at the Bangkok International Film Festival with his love trilogy Before We Fall in Love Again.

Juwita Suwito

Hailing from Terendak Camp, Malacca, Juwita Suwito started off on the music scene as a sessionist and backing vocalist for Malaysian artistes, award shows and post-production studios. She soon developed her own voice and was often called upon to record song demos for East Asian publishing houses. Her rendition of Breathe Again on the original soundtrack of the Taiwanese TV drama series, The Outsiders, brought her international attention. Juwita has since given well-received performances in Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Kenya, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland and Taiwan. In December 2010, Juwita decided to dabble in the world of theatre, debuting as Mary in the musical Follow The Light which received notable reviews. She also hosted LiteFM’s weekly radio show, Best of Asia.

Kenneth Fong

Dr Fong is currently in full time private practice at Sunway Medical Centre, Petaling Jaya. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1998. He trained to be an eye surgeon in London and carried out further training in retinal surgery at the Lions Eye Institute and Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia. He is currently the Honorary Secretary of the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology. Dr Fong is highly respected in his field of eye surgery and has published more than 40 scientific papers in international journals as well as book chapters on cataract surgery. Together with his wife, Chui Hoong, who is a dietitian, he co-authored a book called “Food For Your Eyes” to raise awareness of a blinding eye disease called Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Ramli Ibrahim

Datuk Ramli Ibrahim has set dance stages ablaze from Chennai to Paris for more than three decades. His rigorous training in ballet, modern, and Indian classical dance reflects his multi-faceted approach to the Arts. As the artistic director of the Sutra Dance Theatre, he has choreographed stunning works and nurtured some of the brightest dance talents from Malaysia. He has been instrumental in transforming the dance scenario in Malaysia by boldly charting new paths and he is known for single-handedly establishing Odissi as a widely appreciated dance form in Malaysia. He studied Odissi under the late Guru Debaprasad Das and on the latter’s demise, continued with his foremost disciple, Guru Gajendra Kumar Panda. Datuk Ramli is also the recipient of the Fulbright Distinguished Artist Award in 1999, among his other accolades.

Sam Triggy

Hisham Mahdin or more popularly known as Sam Triggy, is a guitarist with a twist from Johor, Malaysia. Among his accolades include acing the solo category in the ‘Champions of Pepsi – Young Discovery’ in 1997, the Malaysia Electric Guitar Competition (Yamaha Combo Mix, Harian Metro) in 2000 and the Yamaha Malaysia Guitar Festival (Yamaha Music) in 2002. Back then, he invented his own technique of guitar playing called tap picking. With a combination of 2 guitars playing simultaneously, his tap picking techniques gives a new breath of musical exuberance. Sam Triggy recently designed two musical instruments – one is a string instrument called ‘Vesitra’ and the other, a wind-blowing instrument called the ‘Humbuse’. Both unique instruments present new sounds to his music, which has been incorporated into an album to be released soon.

Tommy Tan

Kelantan born Tommy Tan is a strategist by day, founder of Sparks – a small boutique set up that aimed to help SMEs on marketing, advertising and media plans. As part of his setup, he explores into gamification for the purposes of marketing and customer retention. Having worked on many brands – big and small, global and local – from the knowledge and his experience garnered, Tommy wanted to put his skills to more meaningful returns by helping smaller medium enterprise in their marketing efforts. He believes that everyone can be the catalyst for change and that every idea should be entertained, nothing is too small and nothing is too big. He was approached by his closest friends to help out a local breastfeeding advocate NGO on media planning. This lead to a new initiative, BFriendly – to help mothers’ breastfeeding journey a happier and friendlier on

Vicky Threadell

Victoria Treadell, or more intimately known as Vicki, was appointed the British High Commissioner to Malaysia in October 2014, succeeding the late Simon Featherstone CMG. Born in Malaysia, Vicki received her early education at Tarcisian Convent in Ipoh, before moving to the UK where she studied at Bexhill College. She then took up an International Affairs course at The London School of Economics. Vicki Treadell joined the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1979. She was formerly the British High Commissioner to New Zealand and, before that, served in India, Pakistan and Malaysia. During her postings to New Zealand and Mumbai, she not only built bilateral relations and business connections, she was on the ground, hands-on, looking after British people who were caught up in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks as well as the Christchurch earthquake in 2011.
