Theme: The Seeds of Change - Women

Sacramento’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less centered around the topic of change. This Changes Everything WOMEN is dedicated to women daring enough to dream. To reimagine the way things are as the way they can and should be, and whose ideas promise to disrupt the status-quo and forever change the way we see things.

This season’s theme is This Changes Everything and today’s event is themed: “WOMEN”.

Century Got BARS

Century Got BARS, (BARS) is a Sacramento hip-hop artist originally from Detroit. BARS released her first album, “Music4Music” in 2011. She made her iTunes debut with her sophomore album, “Forget Today Remember Tomorrow” in 2012. In 2013, she won the Sacramento News and Review Sammie Award for Best Emcee becoming the first female to win in this category. BARS released her current album, “3” in June. Her style is influenced by the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC and is mixed with rock, EDM, neo-soul and 90s boom-bap. BARS continues to spread positivity through song while sharing the culture of hip-hop. Centry Got BARS is joined on stage by James Cavern and Michael Ray.

Amy Logan

A global women’s human rights activist, Amy Logan is the author of The Seven Perfumes of Sacrifice and the Consulting Producer for the documentary, “The Price of Honor”. As an independent scholar, Amy has presented her research on honor violence against women at New York University’s Global Secularisms conference, Oxford University’s Women’s Leadership Symposium, and many others. As a two time survivor of gender-based violence, she’s shedding light on the previously unknown origins of “honor killing”, unveiling why Americans should care about it, and how we can transform it. Her mission is to empower women to co-create a world with men where everyone thrives.

Emily Graslie

Emily Graslie graduated from The University of Montana in 2011 with a BFA in Painting. During an internship with UMT Zoological Museum in her senior year, she developed a relationship with science that turned into a love of skeletal preparation and the inner workings of natural history museums. In January of 2013, Emily, with the help of educator Hank Green and producer Michael Aranda, launched, “The Brain Scoop”, a YouTube channel about the inner workings of natural history museums, all aspects of science, biology and the joys of discovery. As The Field Museum’s first-ever Chief Curiosity Correspondent, she uses a variety of new media to share stories with learners all over the world.

John Marcotte

John Marcotte is the founder and writer of Heroic Girls, a comic book organization dedicated to empowering girls. Much of Marcotte’s stories are based off of his experiences as the father of two girls who love superheroes. He has been covered by several media outlets including the Huffington Post KXTV, USA Today, and others. His girls are well known and often drawn in the comic book and geek scenes across the U.S. John has garnered quite a following and speaks to a topic that's on the forefront of the minds of people around the globe.

Parie Wood

A Sacramento native, Parie Wood has been writing since she was 8 years old, and bought her first guitar two years later with her own money. Dedicated to the craft of making music with talent, patience, and persistence, Parie Wood has already accomplished what many musicians are still striving to achieve. With youthful energy and a twist of a classic sound, Parie Wood had already written and composed her own album while in high school. Recently, Wood is working on her second album, and has been focusing on allowing her songwriting to naturally grow more complex and dynamic without losing any poignancy. She is also doing more collaborative shows, and has taken to the mandolin. After taking more than half a year off of performing to focus on her studies, she's back and more inspired than ever.

Sarah Menzies

Sarah Menzies is a videographer and filmmaker, from Seattle and the founder of the production company LET MEDIA. LET MEDIA takes the authenticity that comes from allowing a story to happen and combine it with clear, guided direction to create films, photographs, and written stories. They are a production company focused on genuine storytelling, centered around environmental issues, social justice, and engagement. LET MEDIA works with brands, companies, and nonprofit organizations to carefully create and curate documentary films, branded product videos, poignant activism pieces, and lifestyle photography that empower audiences to let their own story unfold.
