Our whole lives we are told that strength will help us endure life’s battles. Most of us love a good superhero story out of admiration for their strength. Black women don’t have to wish for this trait—society has already told us that we have to be the strongest in the room. Enter the “strong, independent, black woman” stereotype. But that strength comes at a price and we need a healthier model. Real strength actually comes from the courage to show up as ourselves.
