The April 2015 Nepal earthquake was devastating, killing about 9,000 people and injuring over 22,000 residents. At the time just a student, Singhal decided to help the people in distress despite having next to no resources. Casually strolling through a tea stall, an idea struck him that it is the pocket money received by young teens which is usually spent recklessly, could be rather used to rebuild Nepal and help the victims of the calamity. This campaign rose to become a huge phenomenon, and one of the best campaigns in the world, being given credit in the UN General Assembly.
“When we have clarity of mind, ordinary things can happen extraordinarily”, says Singhal when introducing the clay mugs to the Secretary-General of the United Nations as an initiative under the Indian Government to go ‘Vocal for Local.’
