Unconscious bias is detrimental to personal and professional relationships because it leads a person or organization to make decisions without clear thinking based upon attributes that may not actually be relevant to the relationship or task necessary. But equally detrimental are conscious biases, says communication expert Claudia Jean Virga. Using the example of deliberate dating standards regarding things like height, number of children, and smoking status, Virga details the opportunities that are missed when unnecessary conscious biases limit possibilities.
