Designers have created inexpensive smaller living spaces in recent years, in recognition of the fact that teachers, millennials, and aging boomers don’t need a big single-family house to call home. Meanwhile, accessory dwelling units – carriage houses, in-law apartments, and granny flats – are affordable housing hiding in plain sight. What needs to change are the land use rules to expand housing options, particularly in hot-market cities.
