Most of us have given our time or money to some cause in our lifetime, but very few of us have training in how to give. In the ten years that Alison Stuart spent traveling to Kenya, some unsettling questions arose about the consequences of westerners' idea of philanthropy. Questions such as: Who really benefits - the giver or the receiver? and, can giving actually hurt people? It was only through constant discussions and many experiences with Kenyans, that deep learning about philanthropy started to occur. This talk provides six lessons about the complexities of giving to inspire people to think critically about charitable giving and thus increase the chances that efforts and passions have a positive impact.
