• September 2020
Dr. Staci Martin talks about how she attempts to embody hope and despair through Art and research. She says hope is an ontological need (Freire, 1994) and despair is unfed hope (Martin, 2020). Her talk is about how her "Hope card campaign" has impacted her and the people who have received the cards.
"When I returned from my 3-month Rotary Peace Fellowship, as the global pandemic was engulfing the world, I knew I needed to do something. All I could do at the time is do small drawings with quotes. I posted them on my facebook page and mailed them to people who asked for them. I offered gratitude for them being who they are and if I knew them, I highlighted the good in what they are doing in the world. The cards have been sent around the globe and reached over 150 people and counting. In this talk, my aim is to show how a small piece of hope can spark hopefulness around the world."
