Chicago’s first world fair, the Columbian Exposition 1893 was host to wonders from around the world and introduced fair goers to new things such as florescent lights, indoor plumbing, commemorative stamps, Cracker Jacks, and the Ferris Wheel. The Pledge of Allegiance’s origin story is also set at the fair; it was first recited at the building dedication ceremony in October 1892. This talk will discuss the history of the pledge including its alterations and legal controversies as it focuses on how the pledge works as civic pedagogy.
