Maternal Mortality rates are significantly higher in the United States than in other developed countries. The likelihood of dying during or in the postpartum period following childbirth is 4 to 5 times higher for African American women. Undeniably, unconscious bias is the culprit of many of these preventable maternal deaths that occur during the labor and delivery and postpartum period. While the intent is to raise awareness in care providers and the community as to how we blindly silence the voice of African American Mothers in distress, the solution however will be an inherent win for ALL women. Making Postpartum and Newborn Home-health Care the universal standard of care for ALL women will ensure that we are creating a bridge of care from the hospital to the home, enabling early detection and intervention of these warning signs by Professional Registered Nurses.
