Ian Rosales Casocot, a literary writer, considers the English Only policy for grade schools when he was growing up, a widespread practice in the Philippines, and considers the often paradoxical impact of that practice on literary writing, on self-expression, and on people’s perception of their culture.
“English played a significant role in the development of the national literature, but to truly appreciate literature as a means with which writers can truly express themselves, there is no other literary language than the one that we born into.”
