From a street child to a
Ph.D. is a presentation that highlights Jose Luis Zelaya's life-story of growing up in San Pedro
Sula, Honduras to a finishing a Ph.D. in Urban Education in College Station, Texas. In it, he
describes growing up in absolute poverty, rampant violence and how hurricane Mitch (1998)
separated his family. He details taking a journey as an unaccompanied minor to the United
States to reunify with his mother and sister in the United States which lasted 45 arduous days.
