Project Lucy: Computing systems that reason, learn and think—for Africa’s biggest challenges

About this video: Dr. Charity Wayua comes from a family of teachers. But, unlike her aunts and siblings, she took a slightly different path – and became an education researcher. This, she says, allows her reimagine entirely new possibilities to the education system, rather than just work inside of it. With Project Lucy, she is doing just that.

Project Lucy is an IBM Watson-directed initiative that is exploring cognitive technology-based solutions to many of Africa’s biggest challenges. In this touching film, Dr. Wayua breaks down one small but vital piece of Africa’s education challenge – teacher shortages – and explains how cognitive technology has the potential to upend typical solutions to overcrowded classrooms.
