Vera Gheno has us reflect on how we are the only living beings to possess the capacity of language, but often do not take account of this ability. With words, we describe our reality, and with words we can caress and hurt, convince and reject. We are inspired to love our language again and to rediscover the power of using the right words.
Gheno is a sociolinguist and has been involved in computer-mediated communication for 20 years. She teaches at the University of Florence and holds courses on the ethics of communication in schools, in companies and at the master's level at university.
Gheno manages the Twitter profile of the Accademia della Crusca and collaborates with Zanichelli for language and education issues in the new media. She also translates literature from Hungarian into Italian.
Gheno is the author of two books: "Guida pratica all'italiano scritto (senza diventare grammarnazi)" [Practical guide to written Italian (without becoming a grammar nazi)] and "Social-linguistica. Italiano e italiani dei social network" [Social-linguistics. Italian and Italian social networks].
