For many students, a summer job provides little more than a temporary bump in savings. For Ruby Rios, her summer in community service started a sequence of events that took her across the world and changed her life. In this talk, Ruby uses her story to illustrate how young people can make an impact in their community, and how stepping outside of your comfort zone and following your passion can bring unexpected rewards.
Ruby Rios is a senior student at Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas and a cybersecurity intern at Cerner Corporation. She’s a leader in her school’s FIRST Robotics and forensics teams, and she’s been especially active in the Kansas City community, working to improve STEM-related opportunities for young people (STEM = science, technology, engineering, and math). Ruby believes more interesting educational activities can help Kansas City take the lead in bringing more girls and more diversity into STEM fields. Besides her technology interests, Ruby also loves dancing, and her favorite video game might be “Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix”.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
