In what sense can we consider Eger (Hungary) to be a European city, and what ties existed between Eger and Western Europe in the past? Nick Tayler recommends a novel historical perspective that demonstrates all the many different ways in which the town’s history connects to developments in Western Europe and how many different European peoples participated in creating the settlement, dating back in time to the beginnings of Hungarian history in the age of the Árpáds (Hungary’s first royal dynasty). Eger has good reason to be proud of its European heritage. By recognizing the significance of these links every inhabitant of Eger should feel emotionally closer to the rest of Europe and every visitor more at home when visiting the town.
Nick Tayler came as a teacher of English to Hungary in the 1980s and has lived in the town ever since. His wife Kati is Hungarian. They have four children. Nick has always been interested in history, particularly the topic of ethnic and linguistic diversity in the Carpathian Basin. Apart from Hungarian, he also speaks German and some Slovakian. He also writes a blog in Hungarian (and now partially in English) entitled otthonmagyarorszagon.blogspot.hu (At Home in Hungary) focusing on matters of historical and topical interest.
