When Jirayut “New” Latthivongskorn told college advisors he wanted to go to medical school, they didn’t know what to say to him. They had never heard of a medical school admitting an undocumented student. Latthivongskorn, who was born in Thailand and moved to the U.S. at the age of 9, shares his powerful journey as an undocumented immigrant who became the first undocumented medical student at UCSF at TEDxBerkeley 2018.
"After investing all this time, my career in medicine is still fraught with uncertainty. Without DACA, I wonder if I will be able to enter residency and complete my medical training. I wonder if there will be more than 100 unicorns next year, and the year after that?"
