해양 전문가인 낸시 라블레는 멕시코 만에서 수중 생명이 살 수 없을 정도로 산소가 부족한 지역인 '데드 존'을 연구합니다. 멕시코 만에는 세계에서 두 번째로 큰 '데드 존'이 존재하며, 물고기와 갑각류가 죽어가는 것은 물론이고 어업까지 황폐화시키고 있습니다. 라블레는 그 원인이 무엇이고, 어떻게 악영향을 호전시켜 자연의 보물을 되찾을 수 있는지 설명합니다.
