The end of globalization (and the beginning of something new)

I first read Zuboff's work in the 1990s, and she is the authority on the impact of technology on our lives. This is a long book but very much worth a read. In the near future, the way in which the big regions of the world deal with the internet will become increasingly different.

In a world bedazzled by new technologies, it is too easy to think that the problems that face us are new, and have not been written about before. This is not true — and I would flag some older texts to illustrate this, as we can (and should) learn from history: JK Galbraith is a must (The Great Crash 1929 and Affluent Society), the late David Graeber's Debt: The First 5,000 Years and Karl Popper's The Open Society and Its Enemies.

Given the size of the financial sector, there are relatively few good books about it, but I want to flag a few. Let's start with Liaquat Ahmed's Lords of Finance, one of my favourite economics books because it is written with passion and combines history with finance.

David Lough's No More Champagne is another one in this field and gives a very original take on Churchill.

For those interested in corporate finance, The Last Tycoons by William Cohan is good.

For anyone looking to dig more into what is happening in the world economy, and globalisation in particular, I recommend the websites and databases of the OECD, the Bank of England, the World Bank and WEF, along with the websites of university departments like the Harvard Belfer Centre and NYU. For students in particular, I recommend picking out the leading academics in a field, and following their blogs or working papers — Dani Rodrick, William Goetzmann, Branko Milanovic and Adam Tooze are good examples.
