Throughout my high school career, I believed I was good at learning and by many standards that appeared to be true: I earned good grades and was even admitted to Harvard. But looking back on my high school and college years, I see how often my approaches to learning and studying failed me. Now, as a psychology teacher, I see many students using the same strategies and facing the same difficulties. In my talk, I will consider how illusions of competence can prevent students from reaching their fullest potential and how learning about learning can help everyone to improve.
