Maria invites the audience on a journey of self- reflection as she shares her story on how dismantling her Kikuyu privilege in the face of racism taught her about the similarities of the privileged. Her experience with racism brought her face to face with her ingrained traits of privilege; a common thread of attributes that run through most members of privileged groups. She learned that the very pain and humiliation she felt due to racism, she had knowingly or unknowingly meted to another in her own country.
Maria Mutitu was born in Kenya and moved to the USA where she received her BA in Education and MA in Teaching English as a Second Language and later received her PhD in Curricuum and Instruction in Canada. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Woosong Language Institute. A strong advocate of practical and reflective learning she involves her students in a variety of in and off class activities that make language learning less intimidating but yet challenging, with lasting results.
