Margaret discusses the importance of facing up to the darker parts of our past. As debates rage about how to deal with historical legacies in Oxford and beyond, Margaret draws on historical and modern examples to illustrate the relevance of the past today. She argues that by understanding our past and allowing our stories to be told, we can build a better future and erode the dangerous ‘us and them’ narrative. Only then can we have the democratic space to challenge, to discuss, and to learn.
