It's Time To Start Monitoring Our Sixth Vital Sign: Depression
Madhukar Trivedi, M.D. • TEDxPlano
NOTE FROM TED: Please consult a mental health professional if you are struggling. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf Dr. Madhukar Trivedi is a leading expert in mental health research, particularly among children. Dr. Trivedi notes 70% of adult depression cases had onset during puberty. He believes depression should be seen as a treatable illness and should be proactive rather than reactive. He and his team have a simple goal: reform clinical practice to bring about better diagnostic procedures, treatment options, and prevention efforts. Regular screening for depression should become the sixth vital sign monitored, after body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, blood pressure and pain.
