Whether is was the "It's okay to be white" senate vote, a nine year old refusing to stand for the National Anthem, or a maiden speech in parliament referencing "the final solution" with the help of the mainstream and social media, race relations in Australia has never been more topical and divisive. With only one in five Australians actually knowing an Australian first-nation person, an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, it is hard to get an understanding of the other side of the discussion. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lawyer, Leon Filewood, shares his journey from law to comedy.
Leon Filewood completed his Bachelor of Laws and Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at Queensland University of Technology before going on to private practice as a solicitor in a range of legal practice areas including criminal, family, commercial litigation, corporate and personal insolvency and immigration law. Feeling unfulfilled with private practice, he stepped away to work as in-house council and divisional manager for a not for profit organisation. All throughout his career, Leon has been searching for a platform to leverage important conversations that, as Australians, we all need to have.
