Colorism is a very serious issue in the world that has been deeply rooted throughout history and it has been discreetly carried into the present world. It pertains to discrimination based on someone’s skin complexion usually of the same race. I have personally experienced colorism in my own life and I have come to realize that this must be addressed. I come from the Philippines, a country where fairer skin is rewarded and looked upon as more beautiful. No one has to openly say it but everyone internally knows it and accepts it without understanding how harmful it is not only to society but also to oneself. There is an entire industry gaining profit off this issue which has crippled many of the youth with insecurity to be worried about. The skin lightening industry has only promoted this issue and it encourages this toxic behavior. This is seen also in the entertainment industry which has influenced the youth, including myself, to conform to this foolish beauty standard that damages one’s physical and mental well-being. I have been completely helpless in trying to solve this problem but by discussing this, I can shed light on this major issue of colorism.
