Where is Safe?

“How can we know where is safe?”
This is the question that security expert, Kelsey Hoppe, tackles in this thought-provoking talk addressing our fears and anxieties about travel in a world that seems increasingly unsafe. Kelsey challenges us to examine what it means to be safe no matter where in the world we are and questions the common belief that safe is a place.
Kelsey has lived and worked abroad since she was 18 including in high-risk environments working with humanitarian and development organisations. She is now the CEO of Safer Edge, a security risk management company. She is on a mission to help people understand the concepts of risk, safety and security and how they can analyse and manage it themselves.
Kelsey is the author of three books: Staying Safe on Your Year (gapyearsafety.org), In Lahore: A Contemporary Guide to the City (in-lahore.com); and the lead editor and author of Chasing Misery: An Anthology of Essays by Women in Humanitarian Aid (chasingmisery.net).
This talk is from TEDxBristol 2017: Dare To Disrupt. In a world of constant change and uncertainty, these are the ‘positive disruptors’ ripping up the rule book to challenge received wisdom, demand better, and transform seemingly insurmountable problems into break-through possibilities and new beginnings.
From making a big splash on single-use plastics, to a global campaign to end unwanted hair-touching, or a revolutionary approach to combining robotics with human creativity, we hope you’ll enjoy and feel inspired by these talks.
