As a woman, Karen Lozano took the path less traveled and decided to study Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, she hit several roadblocks when looking for employment because most employers were looking to hire males. Karen decided to continue her education and became the first Mexican women to obtain a doctoral degree from Rice University. She became a professor with a specialty in Nanotechnology, specifically Nanofibers.
Due to the slow production of nanofibers, Karen faced the challenge of providing her students with hands on experience and research opportunities. While at an Elmo show with her sons, Karen drew a huge correlation between the production of cotton candy and the possibility of creating nanofibers with centrifugal force. Launching her own business and creating numerous research opportunities for her students, Karen invented a machine that creates Nanofibers 900 times faster.
