NOTE FROM TED: This talk only reflects the speaker's personal views and approach to policy and education. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf
As censorship efforts in schools and state legislatures threaten free speech and inquiry in the classroom, Jonathan Friedman of PEN America remains a stalwart voice on behalf of teachers and students. His talk not only shows the alarming range of new laws and book bans, but inspires each of us to take up the challenge.
Production note: a few seconds of audio at the beginning of this talk was rerecorded for clarity.
