Wildfires. No matter what we do, fires are an unavoidable part of the future for California. Catastrophic fires that burn whole towns, whole cities, and whole forests are very different from beneficial, low-intensity fires. However, consistent, low-intensity fires - bringing 'good fire' to the land - can reset the fire ecology landscape.
Joanna Nelson has studied fire ecology around the globe as an environmental scientist for 20 yrs. Working with Californian tribal members and culture bearers, Joanna describes the practice of controlled burning, which was employed for hundreds of generations in California, before being outlawed 250 years ago by European settlers.
