Trees are financing a farming revolution in Haiti

Hugh Locke has found a way to turn trees into a form of currency that has helped thousands of smallholder farmers in Haiti to finance their way out of extreme poverty while at the same time combatting climate change, contributing to improved food security and empowering women. Working with colleague Timote Georges, this tree currency breakthrough has led to over 6.5 million trees being planted to date through the Smallholder Farmers Alliance. And now Timberland, the original corporate sponsor, is becoming a client for organic cotton using a new supply chain model that is based on tree currency, connects smallholders to the global economy and has potential for application throughout the developing world.
