How can we look upon the public intellectuals?

Today, many young people contemplate how they can make a positive impact on the world around them. Yet many individuals are the antithesis of progress, with intentions to benefit their own existence and not those of the greatest number of people.
How do individuals and groups navigate a world where the cards seemed stacked against them?
