Have you noticed the huge difference between the anthem of Hungary and the anthems of its neighbouring countries? What is the "ill-fatedness" of Hungarians? The space in which the Hungarians live is the emptiness of the steppe, but they do not allow their experience of this emptiness to seem deficient; they know how to make up for it. However, in this emptiness, there is the reality and non-reality of the mirage, and a timelessness, all crowned by the national culture of grievance and complaint.
In his talk, Dr. György Csepeli looks into what underlies Hungarian negativity, a "levy mentality", which leads to distrust and suspicion. He does so by analysing the anthem and the national holidays of Hungary, and argues that the reason for these problems is the fact that Hungarians cannot co-operate with each other, but tend rather to subversion. However, György Csepeli believes there is a way out of this situation, which is through trust, common goals, and a credit mentality. Free and successful people are those who make up a free and successful nation.
Dr. György Csepeli is an excellent social psychologist, a public figure and a popular media expert. From the beginning of his professional career, he has held an interest in social psychology, national consciousness and intergroup relations. His research focuses on finding out how understanding the national character can help us change the culture of complaint.
