Behind the Long Shadow
Frances Causey |
TEDxTucson
• September 2019
The most insidious and destructive division in the United States is anti-black racism. We cannot heal this division until we recognize the institutional racism that developed from slavery and Jim Crow laws. In this talk, Frances Causey discusses her experience of witnessing anti-black racism and its bitter effects while growing up in North Carolina.
Frances began her career as a journalist at CNN and now works as a documentary
filmmaker. Her latest film, “The Long Shadow“ investigates the historically long reach of the South’s political power, organized around white racial supremacy, that helped define our nation’s political and economic landscape and created tragic consequences for African-Americans both past and present. “The Long Shadow” won the San Francisco session of the prestigious CINE PitchFest Presented by A&E. It premiered in theaters across the US in the fall of 2018, and will be on PBS in the US in February 2020.
