Forget artificial energy, embrace Living Energy
Ermi van Oers |
TEDxAmsterdam
• November 2017
"We flip switches all day without giving it a second thought. We are taking energy for granted. And by doing that, we are taking nature for granted.
Ermi van Oers introduces us to microbial technology in which microbes eat organic compounds and, in the process of breaking them down, release electrons. It’s a technology Ermi used to create a floating lamp that harvested its energy from microbes in the dirty water of the Port of Rotterdam.
Collaborating with researchers from Plant-e, Ermi began to explore the energy that could be harvested from the photosynthetic process of a plant. The result is Living Light. A lamp that lights up with a touch, powered purely by the ‘waste compounds’ a plant produces during photosynthesis.
In this talk, Ermi explores the human relationship with nature and how microbial energy could be the sustainable resource of the future.
