Many nonprofits and charities use sad images and distressing stories to generate donations through sympathy - the worse off the situation, the higher the reward it reaps. But ultimately, this exploits the poor by selling their poverty and creates a need for a constant stream of terrible stories and situations in order to maintain a steady fundraising cash flow. Nonprofit developer Elizabeth Ross Wake argues that there is a better way to fundraise, by promoting progress over poverty.
