• September 2017
In this heartfelt talk, Elizabeth Gowing shares with the audience her experience with the "Ideas Partnership" charity and how through helping babies be kept alive in Kosovo the world can be "knitted together." Elizabeth’s journey has left her with the profound conviction that people donating their time, their love, and their skills are not just what it takes to clothe a child but what it takes to tackle just about any challenge in our world today.
Elizabeth Gowing has been based in Kosovo and Albania since 2006. She is the co-founder of The Ideas Partnership NGO which uses the power of volunteers on projects with a particular focus on minority communities. In 2016, she received from President Atifete Jahjaga the Mother Teresa Medal for Humanitarian work. In 2017, she received the "Point of Light" award for voluntary work from British Prime Minister Theresa May. She is the author of four books about the region: Travels in Blood and Honey; becoming a beekeeper in Kosovo (2011), Edith and I; on the trail of an Edwardian traveller in Kosovo (2013), The Rubbish-Picker's Wife; an unlikely friendship in Kosovo (2015), and The Silver Thread: a journey through Balkan craftsmanship (2017). She also works as a translator from Albanian to English, and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4.
