Getting serious about the ‚I' in AI

Understanding intelligence in its many varieties is essential for the progress of AI. To create real, general artificial intelligence, we need to understand better what intelligence is, in humans, animals, and other possible kinds of systems. Although many different definitions of intelligence have been proposed, Dimitri Coelho Mollo argues that there is quite some agreement on the core features of intelligent behaviour.
Once we pay more attention to the ‘I’ in AI, we realise that in order to build real artificial intelligence we need to integrate different strategies and traditions, bringing together the central insights coming from symbolic AI, neural networks, and embodied AI. Dimitri outlines a path forward for AI research, focused on building concrete systems that display the core features of intelligence.
Dr. Dimitri Coelho Mollo is a postdoctoral researcher working on philosophy of cognitive science and artificial intelligence at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and is a member of the Excellence Cluster Science of Intelligence.
