Can we upgrade our social brain "software"?

EN | We know that context matters to whether our attitudes are weaknesses or strengths. But does that also apply to our attitude of trusting, grouping and affiliating with others? Has that been a strength or a weakness over our evolutionary time? And does that attitude depend on our brain’s innate social “software" of molecules such as oxytocin? If so, do we have to stick with it or can we upgrade that “software” to work better for us in the globalised 21st century?
Diana Prata leads the Biomedical Neuroscience Lab at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, with visiting lectureship and research positions at ISCTE CIS-IUL, and, where she has conducted most of her research, King's College London IoPPN. In 2017, she won a Marie Curie Actions Prize for the "Most Promising Scientist in Innovation and Entrepreneurship", among other distinctions and awards totaling over €2M; and published over 40 articles in renowned international journals, as a young independent researcher. Her lab investigates the biology of human social behavior, namely, of empathy, trust, and cooperation - aiming to improve the quality of the social life of psychiatric patients and, by raising public awareness, of everyone. She is also co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of NeuroPsyAI, a company developing diagnostic solutions for neurodegenerative illnesses combining neuroimaging and artificial intelligence. Her work emerges from highly fruitful collaborations that connect disciplines and has received unstoppable media attention. Coherently in the theme of social, Diana loves exploring the diversity of cultures as a globe trotter, social improvisational arts such as theatre, dancing and singing, and heated conversations about anything where she can either learn or help.

A Diana Prata dirige o Laboratório de Neurociências Biomédicas do Instituto de Biofísica e Engenharia Biomédica da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, com posições de docente visitante e de investigação no ISCTE CIS-IUL, e, onde realizou a maior parte da sua investigação, o King's College London IoPPN. Em 2017, ganhou um Prémio Marie Curie Actions para o "Most Promising Scientist in Innovation and Entrepreneurship", entre outras distinções e prémios num total de mais de 2 milhões de euros; e publicou mais de 40 artigos em revistas internacionais de renome, como jovem investigadora independente. O seu laboratório investiga a biologia do comportamento social humano, nomeadamente, da empatia, confiança e cooperação - com o objectivo de melhorar a qualidade de vida social dos doentes psiquiátricos e, através da sensibilização do público, de todos. É também co-fundadora e diretora científica da NeuroPsyAI, uma empresa que desenvolve soluções de diagnóstico para doenças neuro-degenerativas combinando neuro-imagem e inteligência artificial. O seu trabalho emerge de colaborações altamente frutíferas que ligam disciplinas e tem recebido uma atenção constante dos meios de comunicação social. Coerentemente no tema do social, a Diana adora explorar a diversidade das culturas como um trotador do globo, artes improvisadas sociais tal como teatro, dança e canto, e conversas acesas sobre qualquer coisa onde ela possa aprender ou ajudar.
